Submission Guidelines
The Department of English and Literature, University of Benin invites well-researched articles, book reviews, original poems, stories and sketches for inclusion in our biannual editions.
Submission Process
Prepare Manuscript
4,000–5,000 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt. Include abstract (max 250 words) and 4–5 keywords.

Send as MS Word attachment to the editorial contacts below. Include author bio on a separate page.
Assessment Review
Editorial team checks scope, formatting, and originality. Assessment fee of ₦6,000 applies.
Peer Review
Double-blind review by two independent experts. Process takes 8–12 weeks.
Decision & Revision
Authors notified of accept, revise, or reject decision. Revisions must be returned within 4 weeks.
Publication
Accepted manuscripts are published in the next available edition. Publication fee of ₦20,000 applies.
Editorial Policy
The Benin Journal of Literary Studies (BJLS) publishes research articles in English, French and Arabic on all aspects of literature — African, non-African, Comparative and Contemporary. It also publishes research in Theatre Arts, Film/Home Video, review articles, creative works and interviews which contribute meaningfully to contemporary discourse.
Papers should normally be 4,000–5,000 words long, double spaced, font 12 Times New Roman. The Works Cited should follow the MLA style sheet, 8th or latest edition, and should appear at the end of the article.
The Journal is published twice a year in June and November.
Submission Requirements
Abstract & Keywords
An abstract of not more than 250 words with 4–5 keywords must accompany each article.
Author Biography
A brief bio indicating name, title, status, institutional affiliation, address, phone, and email on a separate page.
Spelling Convention
British or American spellings may be adopted but must be used consistently throughout.
File Format
Contributions must be submitted as MS Word (.docx) attachment. PDFs are not accepted at submission stage.
Plagiarism Policy
The Editorial Board considers plagiarism a serious academic offence and strongly advises that authors avoid any act that may compromise their academic integrity.
The Board may blacklist any author found guilty of plagiarism. Articles may be withdrawn at any stage if plagiarism is detected. The Board reserves the right to retract any published article found to be plagiarised.
